My playlist brings all the boys to the yard…

2010
07.13

Quest for Creativity: Day 12 & 13, Lesson 12 & 13: Booze and good friends equal creativity. Add music to the mix and I’m sold.

Winton, this one is for you. And EJ, you too. You music Nazis. In a good way, of course…

It’s late. And I’m loads of red wine and several victorious pool games away from trying to corner that elusive thing called sleep. On a Tuesday evening, no less. But here I am. Trying to be creative…

Tonight my subject of choice is mix tapes. Specifically, music mixes created for you (or me) by people who at any given point in time believed you’d appreciate them, for whatever reason that may be.

I perpetrate mix tapes. Or, at least, mix CDs. I’ve been known to inflict them on friends and acquaintances who’re not always too sure what to do with this aural tribute of love/devotion/like/approval. And maybe they didn’t exactly suit the intended recipient, but they were made with love and honesty, inasmuch as the moment allowed.

So, mix tapes. I’ve been the recipient of some awesome ones. Most notably from a person I’ve met properly, like, once in my life, but who seems to buttonhole my musical tastes and my personality to a T. His mixed CDs have captured my heart and imagination for a few years now, sporadically arriving by mail to brighten up my day and bring some musical joy and discovery for a while. I’ve always learnt something from the CDs he’s sent, and I look forward to every single disk that arrives…

That’s not where my mixtapes/ CDs began, although it’s a high. I have a few mixed CDs from Varsity, made with various degrees of obsession and including tracks that I can still listen to today without cringing… Nothing cheesy. But they contain loads of nostalgia as they leave you wondering, “how did that person know me so well?” A big difference from the mix tapes (actual tapes, this time), I made as a child, taping random tracks from the radio and discovering my likes and dislikes. Bryan Adams rubbed shoulders with Danny Williams’s 1964 hit “white on white, lace on satin, bluebells and ribbons in her bouquet…” When trying to get snippets of a song without the DJs butting in was your biggest concern…

And later, in matric, when a friend smuggled (long story) a tape of Smashing Pumpkins’ Ava Adore to my room while I was recovering from glandular fever. Not exactly a mixtape, but a watershed moment, anyway.

And much later… When a good friend condensed all his mixtapes into a single song to say goodbye: Cold Roses by Ryan Adams. Apt.

The true genius of a good mixtape lies in the person making it’s ability to tap into the essence of the intended recipient. You need to cut through your own likes and dislikes and try to truly channel whatever it is that makes the person you have in mind tick. I’m lucky that I have someone who can do just that for me. As for myself, it’s still a work in progress: I tend to get sidetracked by what I love, and not necessarily what would make the recipient go “wow”…

Anyway… A good mix tape takes creativity, thought and care. It’s a wonderful gift if you get it right… Even when the recipient is a musical philistine.

So for today, my project: a pseudo-mixtape. A happy playlist, that I’m kind of feeling right now. And hopefully, somebody somewhere feels it too… Enjoy!

Jack Parow + Radio Kalahari Orkes = WTF moment for the day…

2010
06.23

A still from the music video Blaas Jou Vuvuzela by Radio Kalahari Orkes vs Jack Parow

Jack Parow pulls out the smooth on a so-called zombie...

“Hallo baby, voor ek jou oopmond soen, se vir my: kan jy braaibroodjies maak?”

Okay, so I would’ve written this blog in Afrikaans, only i figured my poor English-speaking readers would probably miss out on all the brilliance and action and sheer gorgonzola bizarreness of what’s being termed as (translated) the first-ever boeremusiek zombie music video: Blaas Jou Vuvuzela by Radio Kalahari Orkes vs Jack Parow. You’re still gonna struggle to understand the language, but a picture speaks a thousand words…

Maybe it’s my fault: the universe heard my plea today for some B-grade zombie brilliance and sent this my way. Or maybe not. Maybe this is some kind of punishment… But then again, I haven’t actually decided yet if I love it, hate it, or want to give up my passport to Afrikanerdom.
Or maybe, it’s just THAT good that it defies any kind of immediate response other than sheer gobsmackedness.
Or maybe you should just watch it and let me know what you think… Sharing is caring, after all!

PS: My husband smaaks the girls in bikinis. Figures.

Take the pretty blue pill…

2010

Luca Vincenzo on shoot for Pills music video for Pretty Blue Guns.

Luca, aka "the boy in the bubbles". Pics: Thomas Pepler

Looking for some juice to get the creative wheels going? The guys from Bun In The Oven Creative (bitoCREATIVE) can sort you out… And if their recent work on the music video for The Pretty Blue GunsPills is anything to go by, you want them on your side!

bitoCREATIVE is a collective kickstarted a year ago by creative director Luca Vincenzo. It currently has a photography department headed up by Mark Reitz and a film department headed by Adriaan Louw. I had a chat with Luca and got him to fill in some blanks…

I’m lucalucaluca and I’m in the business of ‘make believe’.

My most recent project was directing and producing the music video alongside Adriaan Louw for the new Pretty Blue Guns single, ‘Pills’, off their album Cutting Heads. It entailed an empty attic, confetti and cake, lesbians and loners, little dreams and big egos and the basic idea was a cliché.

On set during Pills music shoot.

A scene from the Pills shoot.

The most frightening moment was when we went into the street to shoot the final scene at 5am after 15 hours of shooting and 3 cop vans screeched to a halt outside the house – turns out they were actually after a dude who broke into a vehicle. When you look at it make sure you turn up the volume and click the ‘View in Full Screen’ option on YouTube. You should look at it. Full stop.

When I was a kid I wanted to make sure I could be a kid forever, this is why I’m doing nothing my parents recommended now. My friends call me Luca and it suits me because that’s my name.

I’d like to work with people who don’t regard themselves as artists because when you give yourself that title I think you lose the essence of creating.

A scene from the Pretty Blue Guns Pills shoot

Would a "Make da circle bigga" joke work?

My proudest moment was when my best friend told me he was proud of me. If I can live a life in balance where I take no more than I need I can probably die happy.

I’m listening to new albums from Local Natives, The Black Keys, Yeasayer, LCD Soundsystem and Foals as well as some all-time favs like Elbow and Broken Social Scene and it all keeps the gears in my head greased.

I drink a lot of Rooibos tea and I probably drink it with more sugar than is necessary, but I have a taste for sweet tea.

My weakness is spiders and you can exploit it by putting a spider in the shower – nothing like naked vulnerability to make you realize you’re just another wild beast.

My next project involves New Holland and after it I’ll probably feel amped for another one. You should read the about section on bitoCREATIVE.com because I want you to visit the website.

My famous last words are 22 years in the making, and counting

If you’re lucky enough to be in Cape Town or surrounds on the 26th of June, make sure you get to the launch of the video for Pills at Zula Bar – check out the details here!

UPDATE: The launch has been and gone, so go check out the video here!

Ooh heaven is a cheesy ’80s song…

2010
06.07

I love those moments… When a piece of music fills you with so much glee that it just fizzes through your blood and crackles out your fingertips… You’re singing along at the top of your voice, your smile’s cracking your head wide open and if you weren’t in your car you’d be bouncing around like a jack-in-the-box on E.

Sometimes, you just scream at the top of your lungs ‘cos the feeling gets too much to keep inside. It’s the purest moment of no-strings-attached joy I know of. Music does this to me, often, always unexpectedly. It’s my happy place.

So what’s the lofty melody and stanzas of lyrical genius that got me going this time?

Erm… Nope, it wasn’t a full-on Hendrix experience, the ripping guitar riff of some rock god… It wasn’t the angsty-yet-beautiful Damien Rice or the preppy Vampire Weekend… It was – wait for it, wait for it (and insert gratuitous drumroll here) – Belinda Carlisle! Yes! Specifically, (We want) the same thing. It’s true… A cheesy ‘80s lovesong so familiar that it’s practically cult got me dreaming about picking up a guitar and my legwarmers again. (They’re pink, and they’re in the same drawer as my Tinkerbell pyjamas.)

But somehow, I can’t feel ashamed about this lapse into cringe territory. In fact, I’m thinking it should be mandatory to rock out to Belinda at least once a week. So let me start your happy moment right now: simply click here… Come on, click it… You know you want to!

Of goats and music (and hippies)

2010
03.07
Richard from Isochronous in action.

Richard from Isochronous getting ready for take off.

Ten thousand people did the lemming-like trek to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens this weekend to take part in Jozi’s first Ramfest - a colourful sauna of mud, music, buckets of sunshine, low-slung skinny jeans and chip & dip.

The organizers apparently didn’t expect such a large amount of people, which led to – gasp! shock! horror! – the booze getting on the short side late afternoonish. The stories I can tell you about the psychotic last-minute scrambles to the beer tent will have you waking up in a cold sweat… You went in looking for a beer, and came out bruised and battered, carrying rum and Fanta mixes, hailed as heroes by your friends. So a lot of us sauntered home sober… But no less happy. And with little bits of new knowledge to help make the next party even better.

Richard Brokensha from Isochronous
“Now sing it with me: insane in the membrane!”

So, Oprah-style, this is what I know for sure…

If your butt’s the bony type that can’t even summon up a decent plumber’s crack, stay away from skinny jeans. Especially if it rides halfway down your hips, showing off your boxers. It’s not sexy. It does make me want to force-feed you chip & dip, though. And pat you on the head and go, “there there”. And another thing – cutting off said skinny jeans just above the knee to create very tight denim shorts? You look like a twat.

Vice magazine is boring. That doesn’t stop you from paging through it, though. Kind of like ogling a trainsmash.

When in doubt, smuggle in booze.

I’m not the only person who’s dumb enough to spend moolah on spur-of-the-moment Hello Kitty button buys.

Wet wipes will save your life.

Dudes chilling at Ramfest 2010.

Mohawks: keeping it real.

Boo! are legends and will remain so until all eternity. Chris Chameleon is the only straight guy alive that can pull off pink tights and a black g-string. It was awesome to see them on stage again, for the first time in years. And if you have to turn to me and ask, “Why are the crowd booing them?” you need to get out more…

Even an awesome band like Die Heuwels Fantasties can get totally buggered by crap sound. Honestly, what was that about? Luckily, The Narrow made a point of upping the sound… I’m blaming them for the neck brace I’ll have to wear for the next few weeks.

There’s always that one guy sporting headgear hilariously illustrating the core idea of the festival. Not that ribbony ram horns and cotton-wool ears look quite as intimidating as the goats on the posters… At least it wasn’t blue bulls-related.

Jack Parow is what Die Antwoord is trying to be. He’s funnier, too.

Vegans eat chip & dip too. But it takes some debating on the sauces available first…

Trying to up your streetcred by going all pseudo-punk? Don’t let the soles of your brand-new Doc Martins give you away…

Getting older means you have no problems elbowing out some space to dance in. Take that emo kid… Respect your elders!

If you don’t look after your towel, it will desert you. Or pick up two random tween Goths.

There’s always a Golden Couple: young, tanned and beautiful (except for a zit and razor nick here and there). They spend hours drawing on each other with black marker. These drawing sessions are fascinating, until they finally finish and you find the end result to be a clumsily scrawled word across Golden Guy’s chest: “delicious”. Round about now you start vomiting.

Festival goers at Ramfest 2010.
This girl’s the air-guitar queen… If only I had a video camera!

A part of me (the part that wakes up with an aching neck and knees after monki punking myself into delirious oblivion) wonders if I shouldn’t just pack it in and leave festival going to the kids who can pull off smartie-coloured gumboots, short-shorts and ripped fishnet tights with nary a hint of self-consciousness. But, luckily, my inner child always wins. I suspect I’ll be the grey-haired granny dozing under a thorn tree at the likes of OppiKoppi one day. Probably selling some kind of contraband. Most likely Hello Kitty buttons…

Why won’t you fall back in love with me?

2010
02.14

Those are perhaps the most poignant words in any song written about love I’ve heard so far… St Vincent and The National’s cover of Crooked Fingers’ Sleep All Summer always leaves me missing people I haven’t even fallen in love with, trying to sing along despite the big lump in my throat.

Not exactly the type of red-blooded love I should be indulging in on Valentine’s Day… But no less valid for being a bit morbid.

As Valentine’s weekends go, it’s been a good one. A whole mix of love: romantic, erotic, platonic, fraternal, parental… With a full complement of chocolate, colour-coded flowers, good food, couples in love drowning in each other’s eyes, witty waiters and street vendors hawking roses… Even Ninja and Yo-landi from hip-hoppers Die Antwoord ventured out into Parkhurst’s loved-up streets for some candlelight and vibes, scaring the locals. Zefsiders need love, too… And all around, mawkish music blaring from the restaurant speakers… You know, the type you definitely DON’T want as a soundtrack to your wild encounter with a stranger in an elevator…

Those closest to me know that music is my Babel fish when it comes to communicating and making sense of life and its foibles. So ending off the day with a list of ten of my favourite songs about love will pretty much put the cherry on top of the perfect schmaltzy weekend… For me, at least!

Sleep All Summer – St Vincent & The National

It’s a sad, honest meditation on how love, despite being a many-splendored thing, isn’t exactly a band-aid for fixing people and keeping things together. “…I would change for you but babe that doesn’t mean that I will be a better man…”

A Sorta Fairytale – Tori Amos

Another bittersweet one, that basically sums up random meaningful encounters to me. “…but I didn’t know that we could break a silver lining…”

Chariots Rise – Lizzie West

Now this one’s more traditionally loved up… But still in a slightly twisted way, I suppose given the context when I heard it the first time: the love scene in the awesome The Secretary. “I took the notes of past excursions/ And I read them through once more/ Only to find them all diversions/ From the one true love in store”

Like A Friend – Pulp

Nothing sucks like being infatuated with someone that is blithely unaware of your feelings… Or knows, but doesn’t care. And you’ll eat up all their shit… “Girl, it’s lucky for you that we’re friends!”

Untouchable Face – Ani DiFranco

And then there are the love affairs gone wrong, gone astray, got away. It doesn’t necessarily mean your feelings have changed. “So fuck you, and your untouchable face fuck you, for existing in the first place…”

#1 Crush – Garbage

Obsessive love: who cares if it only ends in tears? “You will believe in me/ And I can never be ignored”

I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You – Colin Hay
I’ve always thought that this is the perfect song to play at a lover’s funeral. I don’t think I could put missing somebody any simpler or more honest. “Don’t want you thinking I’m unhappy… What is closer to the truth… if I live to be a hundred and two, I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you…”

Head Over Feet – Alanis Morissette

A love song of the more traditional sort… And luckily, with minimal cheese. “You held the door and your breath for me”

Feelin’ Love – Paula Cole

Not horny yet? You will be… “And you would open the door and tie… me up to the bed…”

We Are The People – Empire Of The Sun
“I can’t do well if I think you’re gonna leave me but I know I try… Are you gonna leave me know?” Can’t say much more than that.

Let’s hear it for a bad romance!

2010
01.31

A snip from Lady Gaga's Bad Romance.

Okay, so for the most part, I’m in total agreement with a friend of mine that Lady Gaga’s vocals sound a bit like Patricia Lewis’s, and that she really isn’t that talented – she’s just very savvy when it comes to a totally entertaining spectacle. But I admit that her songs have the power to grow on me, much like mould on my washing the past few rainy weeks. I know all the words to Paparazzi (don’t ask, I don’t even know why…), and I think the video for Bad Romance is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Especially the closing scene…

So I’m in two minds about the Grammys this year. On the one hand, the fact that Gaga’s nominated in the three top categories, for Song, Album and Record of the year, proves that there are those who feel that’s she’s breathed new life into a genre stultified by Madonna’s dodgy gyrations and increasingly boring reinventions… But then there are people complaining that she’s NOT nominated for Top Vocal Album… which probably means that somebody on the panel stripped away all the artifice and drama and just gave the basics a good listen… Anyway, the results to this year’s Grammys actually seems a bit predictable. As in, Taylor Swift will probably sweep the boards. We’ll know for sure tomorrow!

And once again, those truly deserving (in my mind, at least), weren’t even nominated. St. Vincent, The Dead Weather… Oh brothers, where art thou? I feel an attack of Music Nazi coming on…

Check out the nominees and more info at the official Grammy site.

Bopping at the Bo!

2010
01.24

What makes for a perfect evening out? Bad red wine, better pizza, winning at a game or two of pool and some seriously cool choons! This past Saturday at the dark, dank and very damp Bohemian in Richmond was all that and more, and turned into one hell of a blast, despite some serious wardrobe confusion created by hundreds of indie darlings in their button-up shirts, pressed shorts, sleek haircuts and army-inspired jackets… And those were the guys…

Sticky Antlers doing their thing.

I finally got my chance to see Pretoria-based outfit Sticky Antlers, something I’ve looked forward to for ages, ever since seeing the vids for Blind Horse and All This Way. They didn’t deliver. Their trademark low-fi distortion combined with Martinique Pelser’s manically dark vocals didn’t translate well live at all, only succeeding in creating a warped wall of sound attacking your ears through what felt like layers of cotton wool. Not a pleasant sensation, especially if you’re aiming for a combo of noise and tribal-like stomp to entrance the crowd.

It’s a pity, since the foursome have created an anti-corporate rock brand around their music that’s really refreshing: hand-crafted, limited-edition cover artwork (on home-made CD-Rs released on their independent label, KRNGY), buttons, poster art and music videos drawing inspiration from comics, underground art and films and a real willingness to experiment. I’m not sure that I’ll see them live again… Well, maybe once, in a different venue, just for comparison… But I still love the tracks that got me into them in the first place.

Martinique: googly eyed.

Voodoo Child managed to finally convince me of their merit, with a much tighter sound since the addition of ex-Underbelly drummer Hendrik Nel to the line-up, and I’ll always be Heroes Wear Red‘s number one groupie…

Shortstraw!

But my favourite of the evening turned out to be unknown opening band Shortstraw. Geek-chic inspired indie-rock thrash with shit-hot vocals, an even hotter bassist and an interesting array of songs on topics such as the coolness of Keanu Reeves and the Southern Gospel-fun of go fuck yourself… Hallelujah! They got the crowd seriously hyped up – not bad for the opening band at eight o’ clock at the Bo! They’re definitely on my radar now, go check out some of their tracks on their MySpace page to get a taste!

Phil: bringing the bass and the looks!

So stumbling home through rain-slicked streets at an hour unsuitable for human consumption, I had only one thought in my head… “He’s better than you and me, ‘cos he’s Keanu Reeves…”

Cue the music!

2010
01.10

Seu Jorge "recording" his version of Bowie's Life On Mars?

Those who know me well are fully aware of my passion for music*. I have at various times been called anything from a music Nazi to a shameless groupie.

Which is why I think it totally rocks when a movie or television soundtrack shows that someone working on the project has a thoughtful love of music and knows exactly how to integrate songs and visuals to maximum effect. If he/she introduces me to a brand-new gem, so much the better.

These are my Top 10 TV and film soundtrack albums of the moment… Since it’s a wholly personal list, there are loads I’ve left out, especially when it comes to the classics. I’d love to discover new ones, so let me know what you would add, or which you think are total BS!

10. OMFGG Volume 1 (Original Music Featured On Gossip Girl)

Trendy series Gossip Girl is a good example of “The O.C. Effect” (yes, from the series): unknown, underground and indie bands/ musicians get introduced to the wider public via the soundtrack of a successful series or movie, resulting in actual sales for the artists and elevated musical taste for the viewer/ listener. (Hope springs eternal.)

Favourite track: The Pierces – Three Wishes

9. Jennifer’s Body – Music From The Motion Picture

A fun, trashy mix of the hottest bunch of noisy bastards currently on the scene, including Cobra Starship, Panic! At The Disco and White Lies. Perfect to go taxi-baiting to… So even if Diablo Cody’s second movie effort didn’t blow the critics away, the soundtrack still does!

Favourite track: Florence & The Machine – Kiss With A Fist

8. Six Feet Under – Everything Ends – Volume 2

Sexy, darkly stylish and reflective… Who’d have thought the soundtrack of a series on death and funeral parlors would be so enduringly catchy?

Favourite track: Sia – Breathe Me

7. Juno – Music From The Motion Picture

This movie was brilliant for a wide variety of reasons, not least of which the soundtrack. Mixing old school like Buddy Holly and Mott The Hoople with folksy newbies like Kimya Dawson? Legend.

Favourite track: The Moldy Peaches – Anyone Else But You

6. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

David Bowie tracks being sung in Portuguese by the headspinningly awesome Seu Jorge? ‘Nuff said.

Favourite track: Seu Jorge – Life On Mars?

5. Grey’s Anatomy Original Soundtrack Volumes 1, 2 & 3

I don’t know a single person who doesn’t go all snotty wailing “Denny’s dead!” when Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars starts playing… In my mind, one of the most iconic and enduring television moments of the past ten years. The tracks used in the series perfectly mirror the state of minds of the characters at any given moment, and often add a bit of levity or tongue-in-cheek commentary on a scenario that would otherwise have been too overwrought. The artists are a who’s who of the alternative scene. Basically, I adore Grey’s Anatomy. And the soundtracks rock!

Favourite tracks:
Volume 1: The Postal Service – Such Great Heights
Volume 2: Gomez – How We Operate
Volume 3: Peter, Bjorn And John – Young Folks

4.  Twilight and New Moon

Yes, so the movies are soppily cheesy vehicles for indulging a love of sanitized vampires and six-packs… But author Stephenie Meyer is well known to have good taste in music, always crediting the bands she listened to while writing for inspiring her. The soundtracks are truly awesome, a lookbook of alternative and indie talents that you’ll probably never hear on radio, mixed with some well-knowns such as Muse and Linkin Park. It’s sure to introduce you to at least one group you’ve never heard of.

Favourite tracks:
Twilight: Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth
New Moon: Thom Yorke – Hearing Damage

3. True Blood Music From And Inspired By The HBO Original Series

This must be the hottest soundtrack I’ve ever encountered, with the most recognizable opening credits‘ track: Jace Everett’s Bad Things. The choice of tracks encapsulates the essence of this Southern Gothic tale of sass, sex, blood and vampires.

Favourite track: Little Big Town – Bones

2. Garden State – Music From The Motion Picture

I love Zach Braff. Not just for his sense of humour, but also for his impeccable taste in music. If it weren’t for this movie, I’d have taken much longer to discover the magic of musos like The Shins, Iron & Wine and Frou Frou. Like it says on the CD cover, “You gotta hear these songs, they will change your life I promise you.”

Favourite track: Frou Frou – Let Go This link carries the extra whammy of a beautiful visual tribute to director Solveig Dommartin, with footage from his Wings of Desire.

1. (500) Days of Summer

Ze winner! The soundtrack to this movie is probably what pushed me to write my list in the first place. It’s a magical, atmospheric mix perfectly suited to the movie’s subject matter and has been playing non-stop on my iPod for some time now. If you haven’t yet, give it a listen…

Favourite track: She & Him’s cover of The Smiths’ Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want

Right, so let me know your faves and hates!

Footnote:

* Only eclipsed by my passion for hot chocolate. Which reminds me, I recently discovered Jozi’s Lapa Fo restaurant‘s Nutella concoction and nearly took up permanent residence in their kitchen…

8-bit Baby!

2010
01.05
A snip from 8-bit Logic

A snip from 8-bit Logic

I’m loving Cutout Collective right now, the effort they’re putting into their music videos makes for awesome visual experiences. MTV Europe agreed by playlisting the video for 8-bit Logic, as did the South-African MK Awards, who’ve nominated them in two categories for 2010… Two more vids are in the pipeline, for tracks Digital Heart and Eponymous, so watch this space! Check it out…
