Morne Pierre Venter's postcards about Nothing.

Let's talk...

If you ever find yourself lost in translation, these postcards from big-haired bass guitarist for the band Allan John and general design dude Morné Venter might serve as a roadmap.

Or not, who knows.Morne Pierre Venter's postcards about nothing.

What I do know is that nothing is cooler than his series of ramblings on general nothingness. We have two things to thank for his profound sentiments: category #25 of the international D&AD awards: the open category. And Morne’s belief that nothing is a phrase that is too liberally tossed around these days.

Morne Pierre Venter's postcards about Nothing.Says my new favourite guru: “People don’t know what they mean when they say nothing anymore. For a species that does so much of nothing we really have no clue of what’s really going on. We apparently do it a lot, but explaining it is a different story. Instead of trying to solve the world’s energy problems or get a real idea, I took it upon myself to grapple with the metaphorical void and do a project about nothing. What I present to you now is a set of conceptual postcards meant to define, explain and explore “nothing” in search of universal knowledge and understanding.”

I don’t really care if we ever reach that pinnacle of knowledge and understanding… As long as random moments of brilliance like these litter the way.

Nothing. Coming soon to a corner cafe near you.

Webcomic from A Softer World

One of A softer world's webcomics

I love these quirky webcomics… In fact, I think I’m a fangirl of A softer world. Cheers me up immensely. Not much else to say, except that you have to check out Emily Horne and Joey Comeau’s brainchild for yourself. They’re popping cute kittens all over the place… Sometimes, it will make you cry.

A picture speaks…

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain

There’s a reason why we love to look at other people’s photos, why trawling through Facebook albums are such a fun passtime…

We’re vicariously investigating other people’s lives: are they more exciting than our own? More difficult? Boring? We’re trying to find some comfort in the fact that our daily existence might not be as mundane or tragic as we think it is.

We’re obsessed with our own photos as well. Subconsciously reliving our own lives, the moments that we treasure, the highlights…Will it ever be that good again?

It’s all a bit of self-delusion, of course: non of us relish the bad times, the sad times (and no, bad hangovers don’t count) and usually we don’t record them and post them for all to see and scrutinise. And secretly think, “I’m glad I’m not that sad sack!”

A friend passed on this link to a collection of truly awesome photos of celebrities, caught in random life moments. Now I’m not entirely sure where the site got them all from, and even who took them and where, but they make for riveting viewing. I’ve chosen a few of my favourites… Here’s why I like them.

Kurt, kitten and Frances Bean

Kurt, kitten and Frances Bean

Kurt Cobain

What gets me is the juxtaposition… Ultimately, Kurt’s demons didn’t allow any saving – they were simply literally heavier than heaven, if I may borrow from their 1989 tour slogan… And even the idolation of a whole generation of teenagers wasn’t enough. The music wasn’t enough.  The Mudhoney t-shirt is poignant: Kurt was deeply influenced by the Seatlle-based grunge band. I’m not sure when this was taken… The pic of Kurt, the kitten and Frances Bean just plain hurts. ‘Cos we all know what happened next.

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn

She’s always the ultimate lady, perfectly turned out, demure with a hint of mischief. This pic shows her in an unguarded, unselfconsciously sexy moment – and it’s awesome. She looks like a girl you’d want to know.

Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson

You gotta love the man. That insane streak of humour has always been there. And not even Pippy Longstockings-style pants take away from his basic sex appeal. One of the five people I’d like at a dinner party, for sure.

Iggy Pop

I want to be where Iggy’s partying. No two ways about it. In this moment, he’s a god, invincible. The sheer power of his knowing this is intoxicating.

Johnny Depp & his niece Megan

I’ve loved this man since I first discovered him. There’s a hint of the dad he’s turned out to be in this image…

Go check out the images and let me know your favourites… Any extra info on the where and when of these pics are also welcome!

“Paradise of Inhibition”

2010
02.26

Quasimodo's twin perfected the drop-down sneak attack.

That’s my favourite title of all of Peter Mammes’ artworks at his exhibition, Absurd Objects, And Other Relics For The Future, currently happening Upstairs@Bamboo in Melville…

It’s the end result of well on three years of work, and definitely worth a visit. The collection of sculptures, paintings and puppets fascinate with their delving into the more bizarre aspects of human anatomy and medical conditions, specifically the way we perceive so-called “physical deformities”, and how society and culture conditions us to react to such abberrations. Why are deformities and difference necessarily seen as ugly, or unacceptable?

Dr Harold Shipman, probably the most successful serial killer in history (the good doctor killed about 218 people – that are actually known and positvely ascribed to him…) makes repeat appearances in the works, as do various religious markers and ideas. It pushes the thin line between normal and absurd, and investigates how we define these concepts.

Peter’s painted-wood sculptures channel ancient woodcuts.

Peter’s meticulous research and obvious passion for his chosen art form makes this an exhibition that will satisfy curious souls and provide lots of fodder to think on… So go support – it’s on until the 3rd of March! And he’s more than willing to answer any and all questions you might have! (I bet you will have some…)

If you can’t make it, go check out some of his work at www.kettlehandle.com.

Why anniversaries rock!

2010
02.25

Vampire bats and gloomy girls!

I have to do this: I have to brag. If you’re going to share your life with someone, make it someone who absolutely rocks in the gift-giving department! And since 1st anniversaries are all about paper, this is pretty much spot on…

I’ve mentioned my love for Liza Corbett before… And now, I’m the owner of an original, signed and totally rocking piece of her artwork!  It just works perfectly: vampire bats, gloomy girls, even a bit of nipple on show… I’m pretty sure there’s a bloodthirsty bunny hidden underneath one of their skirts as well! Its title? “Emmeline & Adeline”. Imagining their stories is going to be half the fun…

I do love me a good button...

And… three awesome buttons too! Which totally feeds my button addiction! Yep. I’m going to cuddle up to it tonight and dream strangely dodgy dreams. Now go count how many exclamation marks I used in this post!

Something daintily macabre…

2010

One of Liza's creations, titled "Birdcage"

I’ve always had a thing for the dark, mysterious and slightly twisted. So New York-based illustrator/ designer Liza Corbett‘s work is right up my alley. She spins mythology, sex, female archetypes and fairytales into the stuff nightmares are made of – the good ones. It’s rich and textured, and open to interpretation.
Go check it out, there’s bound to be something that will fascinate you against your will!
