Yay for bunnies!

2011
02.02

I think it’s pretty clear by now that I have a thing for bunnies. So even though I’m bummed that 2011 doesn’t mean anything particular for me – I was born in a Year of the Monkey, which figures – I’m still thrilled that The Year of the Metal Rabbit will officially start on 3 February 2011. So to celebrate, here are some pretty pics featuring my second-favourite animal (after Her Royal Highness Queen Peroni): the noble rabbit.

Hunting for bears!

2010
12.01

Andre Chasqueira's Popobe bear

Andre's Voodoo bear and Movember bear

I learnt three things at the Popome exhibition at 70 Juta recently… I’m judgmental. (More on this later.) I’m emo, not hipster. And I should really just swipe my credit card when I feel like it, instead of being prudent. ‘Cos I now seriously regret not buying one of the awesome bears dotted around Bam Bam Creative Studio’s exhibition space, decorated by a bunch of really talented local artists.

Popobe are colourful little bears, made of soft vinyl and uniquely decorated. The craze started in China, as these things do (McDonald’s China even had bears for their Valentine’s Day gift!), but is also very popular Europe, particularly France and Israel, and the States. You can find Popobe keyrings at Ke Ai in Greenside, who played a central part in bringing the bears to South Africa.

Alex Vlachos's Popobe bear

Mr Alpha: Art Is Fun!

These bears are incredibly popular… Says Alex Vlachos, one of the artists and also involved in exposing us to the bears, “it’s a fanatical sub-culture fetish I think. The fact that I still have this urge to collect toys assures me that I’m still human and haven’t grown up yet and become a big boy with the rest of the mindless zombies…”

For the Popome exhibition, much bigger blank bears were brought in and given to local talent to decorate… And the results were pretty rocking!

I’ve picked my favourites and had a chat to their creators…

Andre Chasqueira

How long did it take you to decorate your bear?
It took me a week – a couple of minutes a night after work..
Did you have a specific idea when you started?
I just started with a line and went from there… On the little one I used a ‘tache from a Mexican-themed party that I didn’t end up using so I put it on the bear and thought ‘hey… Movember! It seemed fitting.
The big bear is the voodoo demon fetus-eating flaming-handed madness beast, love child of wild dreams and a world in black and white!
Pretty dark hey…
Yes…
Do you usually feel your way, with no real idea of what you might want to end up with?
Yes, and yes… But there is always some sort of balance, whether it is conceptual or literal. That is where Abraxas lies, in that cusp between one and the other.

Check out more of Andre’s work here.

Mewzilla

Ben's Mewzilla!

Alex Vlachos aka Mr Alpha

How long did it take you?
It took me a week-and-a-half after hours to complete my bear.
Did you work with a theme?
Well I had done a piece for an exhibition the week before and it had this really heavy concept and theme, but for the bear I thought fuck that I’m just going to have some fun for a change and not really plan anything. So it was more about the enjoyment on this one, I think a lot of the other artist felt the same.

Mewzilla

Describe your bear in a sentence…
Art is Fun!

Ben Rausch

How long did your bears take you to finish?
I was in the US when the artists first got their bears, so I couldn’t work on Mewzilla and Microkitten as consistently as I’d have liked. I had to really cram to get them done in time; I spent 2 full weekends at home drawing and then 7 or 8 nights doing the same after work.
What inspired your bears?
My main inspiration was Japanese monster movies, anime and TV shows. In stuff like Voltron and Power Rangers, everyone has their own robot, but when things get really heavy they need to team up and combine their machines into one mega-robot. So the idea behind Mewzilla was to create a super-monster-kitten formed out of 12 different cats.
His sidekick Microkitten is just a very small cat, but he’s still good at fighting because he has a big kittymech called Steline. Steline’s power is generated by a hamster-wheel-dynamo is his right ear. Professor Muggles runs the dynamo and if you compare the size of this little hamster to Microkitten you can tell just how tiny Mewzilla’s sidekick is.

Describe your bear in a sentence:
Mewzilla is the world’s most destructive meowmoster!

People can see what Ben’s getting up to here.

Inger's Popobe bear

MissIngy's emotions...

Inger Holstvig Færch aka MissIngy

How long did it take you to decorate your bear?
The bears took me round about a week-and-a-half to complete, and the 6 prints addition took about 3 weeks to perfect.
Did you have a general theme in mind?
The inspiration was just going with and showcasing my style of illustration. I wanted it to be feminine and soft, yet dark and somewhat cold.
What materials did you use?
For my two bears, I started off using a spray-on primer coat. From there I painted with acrylic paints, and drew in the line work with a black marker. Then to finish it off I used a clear lacquer finish spray.
The process for my prints was first sketched up, and then painted with liquid ink. I then finished off the line work with a black fine liner. Once all 6 were done I scanned them into Photoshop to clean up and get ready for print.
Describe your bear in a sentence…
Soft feminine beauty.

Check out more of MissIngy here and here.

WTF? My point exactly…

2010
11.30

Because we all have those random facepalm moments, Estudio Minga‘s series of WTF? prints strike a chord… The first series was pretty awesome, so the guys have dropped another one… If you haven’t discovered their creative whimsy yet, do yourself a favour and hop on over to their website… I’m suggesting a few more moments they could WTFify:

  • Julius Malema in a canoe
  • Journalists campaigning against Wikileaks
  • The president of China using Google
  • The Pope apologising (in general)
  • Sarah Palin in her own reality show (Oh, wait…)

Here are some of my faves from Minga…

WTF? design from Estudio Minga.

Feeling like a deer caught in the headlights?

My, the piranhas are big this season...

My, what a long trunk you have...

Life through a lens: Sean Brand makes magic

2010
10.08

Chris Chameleon in action at Oppiaarde, pic taken by Sean Brand

Chris Chameleon doing his Monki Punk thing... All pics taken by and courtesy of Sean Brand.

Oppikoppi usually flies past in a blur of colours and smells and impressions… This year though, one particular experience stood out and stuck in my head. Sean Brand’s outdoor photography exhibition, titled En ek kan nie ophou kyk nie. A collection of spectacular photos capturing the essence of a variety of South African musicians in action on stage, it was just a taster of the main project: a glossy, full-colour coffee-table book packed full of pics that will enthrall even the most jaded music fan – or musician, for that matter. I caught up with Sean and got him to fill in some blanks…

The first photo I ever took was of the sky…the shutter went off accidentally. I was fourteen years old.

I realised that photography was something I wanted to do when I saw a photograph of Fracoise Hardy in the LP cover of the movie soundtrack for Grand Prix. She looked so angry and so sexy… I thought the photographer must have been brave to take her picture.

Photographing bands is the most logical thing in my universe. I can sense when something is about to happen – there is absolute order in rock ‘n roll – even in the anarchy during a Fokof show.

The biggest challenge with band/ live music photography is capturing the essence so vividly that the viewer can hear the music… sure, the lighting can be near impossible, but if you can see it, you can shoot it.

My most treasured memory is of two photographs I didn’t take…poignant rock ‘n roll moments so beautiful but ultimately private… I’m NOT paparazzi!

Pic taken at Oppiaarde by Sean Brand, band onstage, moody lighting

Catching the mood...

The photograph I’m proudest of is any picture that inspires good in anyone who sees it… whether it is of them or just something that moves them.

Sometimes people forget that photography can be the simplest way of describing the most complex situation or emotion… but fortunately many photographers capture these moments instinctively and help us understand ourselves better through such images.

The biggest obstacle when taking photos is preconceptions.

The weirdest moment I’ve ever had taking pictures was standing backstage with Justin Kruger (Van Coke Kartel) at Volume Rock Fest II, Potch 2009 and a music fan insisted I autograph the drumstick he caught (from Justin). I said “I’m nobody, dude, but he insisted: “Jy’s mos die ou van “Ek like my steak gaar” (Jack Parow performed Die Vraagstuk that night with Heuwels Fantatsties)… Justin just said: “…teken die fokken ding”.

En ek kan nie ophou kyk nie... Pic by Sean Brand

En ek kan nie ophou kyk nie...

The most photogenic band/muso out there is never the same band – I see the real beauty of the creative essence in rock musicians as the aspect most pleasing in pictures… so fakers NEVER look good, no matter how pretty they arrange pixels on my sensor.

I’m most in awe of Gustav Klimt and Jack White. I’m inspired by simplicity and passion.

The idea for En ek kan nie ophou kyk nie struck when Herman Pretorius and I were chatting backstage at an MK shoot. We were going to colab on it, but unfortunately we lost him too soon… I would have loved his input and vast knowledge… not to mention his off-the-wall sense of fun and humour!

I also enjoy photographing in infrared.

Other projects I’m working on includes a book on infrared pictures and I’m also working on giving longer answers during interviews…haha.

Five basic tips for people who want to take up photography:
Get a camera… you’ll need one.
Have an opinion.
Delete the word “different” from your vocabulary.
Look at lots of pictures… all the time; and decide what you want to say with your images.
Be good at it… it helps to listen to music while shooting and editing!

Sean's book, En ek kan nie ophou kyk nie

If there's one book you've got to get your hands on...

People would never guess that I’m actually hoping to turn professional.

Besides photography, I’m also interested in cameras.

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is “Fuck the concern and feel the width” – Raymond Arenstein, architect and mentor.

A fisheye view…

2010
08.15

So my first batch of lomography photography has been developed, with mixed results. Clearly I have a few things I still need to learn, like how to move the film on properly, when the flash is useful, where the sun is in the sky when I’m taking the pic… But I’m loving the results. Some of the pics have a real faded vintage feel to them. Looking forward to loads more experiments! Some pics below…

Peroni, a black, white & brown patchy cat, reclining on a bed. Fisheye view!

Her Royal Highness Queen Peroni doing what she does best: reclining.

A man wearing a bear mask passed out on the grass during Oppikoppi 2010.

The Teddy Bears' picnic got a bit out of hand at Oppikoppi this year...

A brown chicken at the zoo.

Chicken Little's meeting with Farmer Brown was set to go well...

Mea, a pretty blonde toddler, posing on a rock at the zoo.

Mea. Just the most beautiful thing ever.

This is suburbia.

Of random rabbits and evil bunnies…

2010
07.20

Drawing by Andre Levi Machado Chasqueira titled "Nagumo The Dangerous Rabbit"

Bunnies: not fluffy. Nagumo The Dangerous Rabbit probably wants your heart... On a plate...

I’m in awe of artistic people. Specifically, people who can draw. It’s something I’ve always wished I could do… but besides some stick figures (which were quite expressive, at least!), I’ve never been able to master the art.

Unlike André Chasqueira. His work provokes you to delve deeper, looking for your own meanings. It’s quirky, emotional, dark, but often with a sense of humour and whimsy that’s as unexpected as it is touching. And his evil bunnies are bloody awesome!

André filled in the blanks for me… Read it, and check out more of his work here and also here!

I’m André Levi Machado Chasqueira but you can call me ABRAXAS.

At any given moment you’ll find me doodling.

I’m in the business of broadcast design and motion graphics. I’m obsessed with rabbits, monkeys, pandas – anything with the potential to be darn cute.

I dream about people eating each other like Russian Nesting Dolls in reverse and when I wake up it makes me want to cook up a storm.

I’d like to work with Tim Burton and Jim Henson because I think they live in a similar world to mine…

My favourite piece of my own work is a piece I call Nagumo The Dangerous Rabbit…Titled and inspired by a scary two-part animé I watched that dramatically altered my perception of the Japanese forever named Urotsukidoji I: Legend of the Overfiend and Urotsukidoji II: Legend of the Demon Womb. It’s my favourite piece because I still look at it today and think: “whoa… did I do that?”.

I like to make things in my free time.

Artwork by Andre Levi Machado Chasqueira

Red, white and black

People complaining constantly about what doesn’t really matter makes me tired, and I get annoyed by the pretentiousness that follows.

I draw because I was born to. I found out I could draw when as a young child, I destroyed a series of my father’s architectural draft pens and paper by doodling with them before my dad came home one night – he was imaginably upset by that!

I’m most proud of my persistence to achieving the goals I have set for myself so far.

If you need anything creative, I’m the person you should call.

When I’m not drawing, I’m masticating…I love food food food food…

I’m inspired by beauty, by creativity… I am inspired when in love…

My favourite artists are Salvador Dali, Feng Zhu and Ashley Wood.

If there’s one thing I’d still like to learn it’s Industrial Design.

Life is good when days go according to plan.

The best thing I’ve learnt in the past few weeks is patience is a virtue and old-school romance is far superior to the romance of the now…

If I had any advice for people it would be: be true, work hard, love hard…

The last time I laughed was just a moment ago, watching a YouTube link labeled “Jizz In My Pants“!

Shutting up is hard to do…

2010
07.15

Quest for Creativity Day 14 & 15, lessons 14 & 15: I suffer from verbal diarrhea. It’s hard to shut up in a creative way.

Word counts, schmord counts… I’m not one for curbing the urge to write copious amounts of (what I consider) brilliant prose to inspire the masses aka you. So it’s a bit of a challenge to creatively shut up. Here’s my attempt. Some piccies that have pleased and (hopefully) inspired me the past two days…

Take the pretty blue pill…

2010
06.20

Luca Vincenzo on shoot for Pills music video for Pretty Blue Guns.

Luca, aka "the boy in the bubbles". Pics: Thomas Pepler

Looking for some juice to get the creative wheels going? The guys from Bun In The Oven Creative (bitoCREATIVE) can sort you out… And if their recent work on the music video for The Pretty Blue GunsPills is anything to go by, you want them on your side!

bitoCREATIVE is a collective kickstarted a year ago by creative director Luca Vincenzo. It currently has a photography department headed up by Mark Reitz and a film department headed by Adriaan Louw. I had a chat with Luca and got him to fill in some blanks…

I’m lucalucaluca and I’m in the business of ‘make believe’.

My most recent project was directing and producing the music video alongside Adriaan Louw for the new Pretty Blue Guns single, ‘Pills’, off their album Cutting Heads. It entailed an empty attic, confetti and cake, lesbians and loners, little dreams and big egos and the basic idea was a cliché.

On set during Pills music shoot.

A scene from the Pills shoot.

The most frightening moment was when we went into the street to shoot the final scene at 5am after 15 hours of shooting and 3 cop vans screeched to a halt outside the house – turns out they were actually after a dude who broke into a vehicle. When you look at it make sure you turn up the volume and click the ‘View in Full Screen’ option on YouTube. You should look at it. Full stop.

When I was a kid I wanted to make sure I could be a kid forever, this is why I’m doing nothing my parents recommended now. My friends call me Luca and it suits me because that’s my name.

I’d like to work with people who don’t regard themselves as artists because when you give yourself that title I think you lose the essence of creating.

A scene from the Pretty Blue Guns Pills shoot

Would a "Make da circle bigga" joke work?

My proudest moment was when my best friend told me he was proud of me. If I can live a life in balance where I take no more than I need I can probably die happy.

I’m listening to new albums from Local Natives, The Black Keys, Yeasayer, LCD Soundsystem and Foals as well as some all-time favs like Elbow and Broken Social Scene and it all keeps the gears in my head greased.

I drink a lot of Rooibos tea and I probably drink it with more sugar than is necessary, but I have a taste for sweet tea.

My weakness is spiders and you can exploit it by putting a spider in the shower – nothing like naked vulnerability to make you realize you’re just another wild beast.

My next project involves New Holland and after it I’ll probably feel amped for another one. You should read the about section on bitoCREATIVE.com because I want you to visit the website.

My famous last words are 22 years in the making, and counting

If you’re lucky enough to be in Cape Town or surrounds on the 26th of June, make sure you get to the launch of the video for Pills at Zula Bar – check out the details here!

UPDATE: The launch has been and gone, so go check out the video here!

Viva the Vargas girls!

2010
06.18

I’ve recently rediscovered the Vargas girls… Alberto Vargas‘s iconic erotic and pin-up art’s pretty much an established part of pop culture, and instantly recognisable… The girls are all gorgeous and beautifully proportioned… And, to me, a celebration of feminine beauty… And no, I’m not going to go all feminist on how they’re all pretty much perfect! Some examples below… Also check this cool YouTube tribute!

Something a tad creepy…

2010
05.23

The Last Rabbit - a painting by Mark Ryden, part of his Bunnies And Bees series

The Last Rabbit - a painting from the Bunnies And Bees series.

More wonderfully dodgy art! It’s all muted cupcake colours and sugary little characters poured through a twisted lens… Alice Through The Looking Glass all over again.

LA-based artist Mark Ryden‘s world involves dresses made from meat, girly yet strangely erotic figures blowing bubbles from their, erm, vajajays (no, really) and Christina Ricci holding a bee. And other stuff that makes you wonder what he gets up to in his spare time, besides creating art…

There’s a lot of meat. And little weird-looking bunnies. And cute young girls. But not so much made out of sugar and spice and all things nice… See if you can spot all the references of cultural and religious significance…  The safety of objects turned upside down. I like a lot.
